So, I just made a credit card payment online, and when I was finished, the screen said, 'Congratulations!'
Um. Dude. Congratulations are not in order for routine bill paying. . . . . . .
So, of all the things to be disappointed about, I have to say, I'm kinda bummed that there won't be a new True Blood this week.
I have to say, I really, really dig the show. Amongst all the things I love about it, the biggest one is that in a lot of ways it really gets the atmosphere of the South right, and I always appreciate that. (Other things that get it right: Black Snake Moan, Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil, Love Song for Bobby Long, Steel Magnolias, Doc Hollywood [yes, really].)
The atmosphere is just... on. That's what happens in small towns--everybody knows everybody's business, and the heat and proximity and humidity just sort of cook everything into a big human gumbo. Tempers flare, as do libidos. And tackiness abounds, both of the intentional and unintentional variety.
And I LOVE some of the characters...
***SPOILERS AHEAD! IF YOU ARE NOT CAUGHT UP, FOR GOD'S SAKE QUIT READING!!**
For instance, my personal favorite, Lafayette. God damn, but I love his character, and I am exceedingly joyous that he has not yet met an untimely demise (especially since he's a minor character in the books that gets killed early on). The things Nelsan Ellis has done with that character are downright amazing--I eat up every damn scene he is in. I can just THINK about how he called Sookie 'hooker' in that soft drawl of his last season and make myself laugh aloud. And this scene... oh, this scene. Pretty much sums up all I love of this show:
And I LOVE Tara. Again, she is a minor character in the book, but I love what they've done with her in the show. The things that come out of that girl's mouth.... damn. I wish I had a fraction of her sass. And her biceps, too--she could lay most of the guys I know out. When she told the cop that there was a "big ass motherfucking Paul Bunyan Pig" in the road that made her crash, I laughed until I wept. (So glad they revisited that line this season.)
And. And! The Baby Vampire Jessica/ Hoyt romance! Ah! Ah! I LOVE it! I am just eating that one up with a spoon! When she gets all fangy while kissing him, and covers up her face and says, "I'd die of embarrassment if I weren't dead already"... oh.... perfect! It also helps that Hoyt is basically an exact carbon copy of a boy I used to have the hugest crush on when I was fourteen. Oh, I just love them together!
And Eric... oh, the stuff dreams are made on... And I dig the new haircut.
I also reeeeaaallly enjoyed the moment in the mall (vampires! in the mall! hah!) where the saleslady thinks Eric and Bill are gay:
Interestingly, the two characters I am disliking the most are the two that are supposed to be the center of the show--Bill, and Sookie. Now I do enjoy when even the writers make fun of Bill, like when Jessica mocks Bill's explanation of 'I have errands that do not require your presence'. But mostly, Bill needs the stick removed from his ass. He's not brooding like Angel was on Buffy; he just glowers, which is way less sexy. He's too cute to glower.
And Sookie... gah. She's so much pluckier--and way less whiny and irrational--in the books. In the show, she's downright self-centered and meddlesome. And the way she and Bill just drop Lafayette off AFTER HE HAD BEEN LOCKED UP FOR WEEKS IN A BASEMENT? They basically kicked him out of the car! SOMEBODY GO MAKE THAT BOY A CUP OF TEA AND RUN HIM A HOT BATH AND GIVE HIM A MOTHERFUCKING HUG!
And thus endeth my true Blood recap. Hmm, maybe I'll make a habit of this.
Anybody else watching?
So, this season is ramping up nicely, but at this rate, I am afeared they are going to peak early.
